A Fascinating and Large Early 16th Century Carved Oak Panel
Depicting all the scenes from the Annunciation, Mary visited by the Angel Gabriel, watched over by God, who sends down the Dove of Peace, and the vase of lilies, which represents Mary’s virginity.
I do feel this panel was carved a little bit “tongue in cheek”. God – a jolly looking character – seems to be wearing a most interesting head dress, the Angel Gabriel is in freefall, the urn of lilies is a little on the large side, and Mary appears ready to deliver a backhander to Gabriel. But this is possibly just vivid imagination.
English or Flemish, circa 1500-1550.
