A Charles I Oak Table Box
Having superb front panel, carved with a pair of birds – probably doves – stood on trailing bows terminating in bold thistles. Secondary leaves and thistles support the main theme.
Creating a frame around the birds is a border of joined lozenges, embellished with punch decoration. The ends of the front panels are finished with vertical “chip” carving.
The top is formed from a fine single oak board opening on the original strap hinges with “penny ends”, and is secured shut by the original iron hasp and shaped lockplate.
The box has the most perfect deep colour and beautifully grained timber.
English, circa 1630.
Width 28 hinges, depth 14.5 inches, height 9.5 inches.
