An Extraordinary James I Oak Table Box
Having a single board top with moulded edge, and shaped “lopers” to each end, opening on lovely wire hinges, and retaining an iron hasp, with penny end. The carving to this early box is quite exceptional – the front panel shows two mythical beasts, possibly stylised dragons, facing a superbly shaped central lock plate, which retains the original key. Their scrolling bodies terminating in tales formed from a fleshy leaf, and acorns.
The leaf is repeated on the two end panels, where it sits within a cartouche, enriched with stamp decoration.
The construction of the box is unusual. Each aspect is formed from a single board, which are pegged together with oak dowels, rather than being nailed as would normally be the case.
Superb colour and surface.
English, Gloucestershire, circa 1620.
Width 25.5 inches, height 11.5 inches, depth 14.5 inches.
