A Fantastic 16th Century Carved Panel
The wonderfully carved face, with bright alert eyes, above an exaggerated flamboyant moustache (which complements the outline of his “flyaway” fringe), full lips and beard.
I feel this is more than a face, rather it is a complete body. Imagine that below the head the two outward-facing scrolls are actually arms, which come together in the middle, just above a wide belt. Below, two outward facing scrolls are legs, which terminate in stylised feet.
A fabulous and interesting panel.
English, circa 1550-80.
Height 24 inches, width 10.5 inches.
Ref 3052
