A Fine Late 16th Century Pillar Candlestick

The gadrooned socket, above a square knop, raised on a reeded column, with slight entasis, sitting on a shallow circular base. It is normal on this type of stick for the column to be plain, the reeding is a rare feature.

France, circa 1580-1600.

Height 9.25 inches.

Ronald Michaelis discusses this type of French candlestick in his book "Old Domestic Base Metal Candlesticks", page 45, figures 38 and 39. Both these candlesticks appeared in Sotheby's Sale of Old Brass Candlesticks, 1st November 1979.
