A Large 18th Century Hatchment – Oil on Canvas

Hatchments were painted upon the death of a nobleman, normally the lord of a local manor, to announce the news to the locals. They were often painted by the local signwriter, and hung on the manor gates. After the funeral, the hatchment was taken to the church and hung therein. This hatchment is in excellent condition, retaining good strong colours. It hangs in the original frame, which is black with a gold lining to the inner moulding.

The heraldic symbols and colours of gold, silver and red are associated with the name 'Denham'.

English, circa 1800.

Width 68 inches x height 68 inches.

Ref 735
