A Large and Flamboyant 17th Century Carved and Pierced Oak Panel
The central female figure – possibly depicting the Roman goddesses Abundantia or Pomona, who are both associated with fruitful abundance and plenty. Here she is shown surrounded by bunches of grapes set within extravagant scrolling vines. Upon the figure’s head is an open basket overflowing with fruit and foliage. The carver has set out to present a panel depicting a scene of great opulence and abundance, which he has managed magnificently.
Around the panel is an intricate run-moulded frame.
A wonderful colour and rich patina.
English or Flemish, circa 1680
Height 39 inches, width 18 inches
