A Most Beautiful Intricately Carved and Polychromed Madonna and Child

Dating from the beginning of the 16th century, carved in limewood, with very fine polychrome decoration, this small figural group has a most fantastic gentle ‘aura’ around it. 

Mary’s face, under a simple coif, has a gentle and serene elegance, her eyes are turned slightly towards her son Jesus, who she supports in her left arm.

The child again, beautifully carved, lifts his right hand in benediction. In his left hand he holds an orb. 

The whole piece has a wonderful colour and surface. 

Flemish, possibly Mechelen, circa 1500.
