A Rare Late 16th Century Large Tapestry Cushion Cover
Finely woven in coloured silks and wool depicting a rural scene. The kneeling maiden is Abigail, and the mounted warrior is King David – the meeting of King David and Abigail was a popular subject of Renaissance art.
The scene is set amidst flowers and foliage interspersed with domestic animals; an exotic bird perches in a fruit tree, with village houses in the background.
The original border has four central panels showing domesticated animals, fruit and foliage.
The condition, colours and detail are excellent. The textile is mounted in a narrow 18th century walnut frame.
Northern European, circa 1580.
Width 23.5 inches, height 24 inches.
