A Rare Small George II Oak Chest on Chest

Another superb piece of 18th century Welsh furniture. This oak chest on chest displays all the characteristics of a “town-made” walnut or mahogany example. The moulded cornice contains a fine dental detail which sits above a “rope-carved” band, above a blind fret.

The upper part has three small drawers across the top (containing two secret compartments) and three long drawers below, all set within reeded quarter-pillars. The lower part has a brushing slide above three long drawers and the whole piece sits on the original “curly” bracket feet.

As in the case of the George II clothes press, the joiner here used the local slow growing Welsh oak throughout; topboards, backboards, are all stout boards, whilst the drawer linings are carefully thin-cut boards. The brass swan-neck handles and escutcheons are original.

Again, the colour and patination are quite exceptional.

Carmarthenshire (Wales), circa 1750.

Width 41.5 inches, height 73.5 inches, depth 20.5 inches.

Ref 720
