A Rare Small James I Oak Table

An outstanding piece of early 17th century English furniture. The twin boarded top above a gouge-carved front, containing a small panel and hinged door, which opens to an interior with concealed lipped shelf behind the single panel.

The run moulding on the top and bottom rails is repeated on the back of the cupboard (which may indicate the piece was made to be free-standing), whilst the end panels have small ventilation holes which suggest the piece might have been used for storing food, possibly in a bed chamber. The beautifully turned legs are joined by heavy stretchers which have a simple mould along the bottom edge and terminate in half-cup toes.

Exceptional colour and surface.

English, probably Wiltshire/Dorset, circa 1620.

Width 34 inches, depth 22 inches, height 32 inches.
