A Small George I Oak Bookcase

The twin panelled upper doors, which retain the original iron H-hinges, opening to reveal a very simple fitted interior of shelves and “vertical folio divisions”. A hidden compartment runs along and behind the top shelf.

The deep concave waist moulding conceals a full-length drawer, below which are two single panel doors, which again retain the original iron H-hinges. The deep bottom moulding sits above turned bun feet.

This unique piece of furniture was probably made by an estate joiner for one of the family’s children.

English, circa 1710.

Width 30 inches, height 53 inches, depth 11 inches.
