A Small James I Oak Refectory Table

Blessed with the most superb proportions, and having a 3-plank top, which retains the original “cleats” to each end (each plank is morticed through the cleat and then wedged in place).

The front rail has thumb-gouged decoration, with scrolling “ears” to each end. The ears are integral with the rail and not applied as separate pieces. Each end of the base is deeply arched, again cut from the solid. 

The substantial legs are boldly turned with a “cup and cover” design, typical of the late Elizabethan/early James I period. Around the base are stretchers, again of robust proportions, which connect the legs.

Although small, this table has terrific presence, colour, surface and patina.
