St Paul – A Mid 15th Century Carved and Polychrome Figure
St Paul was typically painted or carved with long hair and beard, a book grasped in his right hand. This is how we see Paul in this sculpture, carved very much in the ‘soft’ style, popular after 1400 - knee pushing outwards, cascading robes and a gentle expression.
The polychrome is excellent, having faded over the decades to a lovely muted tone.
Flemish, circa 1450-1480.
Height 17.5 inches.
