A Superb 15th Century Carved Walnut Saint

A most impressive sculpture of St Margaret of Antioch (patron saint of childbirth and midwives). Having a gentle face, with curled hair showing beneath her shawl, she stands with her right leg slightly bent forward, giving her a more relaxed appearance, often referred to as the “soft” style, as opposed to the slightly harsher appearance of works before 1400. In her left hand, Margaret holds a sword, whilst a dragon looks up from the base. The colour of the walnut is outstanding, having been burnished for many years.

Burgundy, France, first half of the 15thcentury.

Height 43 inches, width 14.5, depth 5 inches.

Ref 911
