A Superb Elizabethan Oak Standing Cupboard
The twin board top, having a simple moulded edge, with incised outline decoration. The top is secured to the rails by square oak pegs. Beneath the top is a side-hung drawer, with a strapwork carved front, set within a moulded frame. The strapwork detail is also repeated to each end. The drawer retains the original iron “pulls”.
Below the drawer are three lozenge carved panels, set between strapwork uprights. The centre panel opens on iron pin hinges to reveal a vacant interior. To the underside of the cupboard is a good, deep, waist moulding, with well carved “lunette” type decoration. This is a well concealed working drawer, with a rare and ingenious iron locking mechanism.
The open base of the cupboard has a boarded back and two wonderful fluted cup and cover supports, retaining the original “pot” shelf, edged with well worked mouldings, centred by scratched carved decoration.
An extremely rare and wonderful piece of late Tudor furniture. The colour is superb, as is the surface, or skin, and the originality is quite exceptional.
English – southern, circa 1585-1600.
