A Superb Late Charles II Oak Table Standing Spice Cupboard
The single door, divided into a quatrefoil design, by 20 small pieces of intricate moulding. The four indents finished in burr yew panels. The door has a lovely small iron escutcheon, which sits afront of the original working lock.
The door opens on the original pin hinges – a mechanism normally found on 17th century chests, but most unusual on a cupboard.
The interior has five drawers, all with the original brass pulls. The fronts of the drawers decorated with intricate geometric mouldings. Each drawer is lined with an 18th century blue lining paper.
Original little turned fruitwood feet support the cupboard, which would have stood in a more formal room – perhaps a dining room – rather than in the kitchen.
Lovely proportions, and a great colour.
English, circa 1685.
Width 13 inches, depth 9 inches, height 14 inches.
