A Wonderful Carved Oak Tudor Portrait Panel
The head, having a noble and distinguished face, which is carved in exceptional detail, moustache, beard, nose and eyes are all superb. However, the carver’s great skill is shown in his execution of the subject’s “ear”, which is quite remarkable.
The gentleman is wearing a hat of the period, and the whole face is sat in a deep roundel supported by carved swags and scrolls. Below the head are a pair of stylised mythical beasts facing each other, with “horse-like” heads, their bodies finishing in an enriched scroll.
A good sized panel, of great colour and surface.
English, circa 1550-1580.
Width 12 inches, height 22 inches.
Ref 3017
